But after reaching the scene on Edinburgh’s Gorgie Road they were alerted to the body of a 62-year-old man being found on the city’s Calder Road.

A source revealed the truck driver had known nothing about the collision until he was approached by police.

The insider said: “This seems to have been a tragic accident.

“The HGV driver was unaware he’d hit the guy on Gorgie Road and continued with his journey. But around two miles later the man’s body fell from underneath the lorry onto the road. There was nothing that paramedics could do to save him.”

The busy road was closed for around seven hours while collision investigators and forensic officers carried out a probe.

A forensic tent was erected over a section of Calder Road as cops began their investigations.

Sergeant Jill Kirkpatrick said: “I appeal to anyone who was in these areas at the time to come forward.

“We are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this incident and would appeal to anyone who was in the Gorgie Road or Calder Road area around the time of the crash to please come forward.

“If you have any information, or potential dashcam footage, which could assist our enquiries, please call police on 101, quoting incident 1457 of 14 November.”
